How San Francisco’s Westfield turned into a ghost mall: The dying center where 75 PERCENT of units are empty and more stores are closing, with footfall down by half as shoppers avoid crime and homeless hotspot

How San Francisco's Westfield turned into a ghost mall: The dying center where 75 PERCENT

The mall’s cavernous, marble-floored atrium is eerily quiet. There’s not a single shopper in sight and a litany of abandoned stores lay mostly empty, but for a few leftover cardboard boxes or fading signs which serve as a reminder of the former occupants. This is not a scene from a post-apocalyptic TV show. And it’s not a so-called ‘dead mall’ in some forgotten corner of America. This is the palatial San Francisco Center on a Friday afternoon in mid-January, when just a few years ago the luxurious complex would have been heaving with shoppers reveling in after-Christmas sales.

San Francisco's oldest toy store which inspired Toy Story blockbuster movies shuts down

An iconic San Francisco toy store famed for inspiring the Pixar franchise Toy Story has been forced to close after 86 years in business due to the city’s rampant crime and homelessness epidemic.  Jeffrey’s Toys shared the news this week that it would be permanently closing its doors, citing a crimewave that had left it ‘struggling for a number of years.’  The store’s attorney named the ‘perils and violence of the downtown environment’ as the main factor driving the decision, alongside ‘inflation, the decrease in consumer spending and the demise of retail across the world.’

The cost of progressive policies: San Francisco’s dying Westfield Mall loses ONE BILLION dollars in value in seven years and is now worth just $290M, as forlorn tourists are filmed wandering crime-ridden city’s ailing downtown

The city’s largest mall, owned by Westfield and Brookfield who stopped making mortgage payments last year, is now worth only $290 million, which is 75 percent less than seven years ago, according to the Real Deal . Shoe store Alto is set to exit the mall next week, and numerous tenants, including Nordstrom, Adidas, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Lego, have abandoned the mall since 2020. When its former mall operator Westfield turned the property to its lender last year, it blamed ‘unsafe conditions’ and ‘lack of enforcement against rampant criminal activity’ in large part for Nordstrom’s departure. The mall is located in the troubled Union Square area in the center of downtown, which has witnessed businesses and tourists fleeing since the pandemic, with groups attributing to crime , homelessness, and work-from-home policies.

San Francisco journalist shares photo of tourists walking down ‘GUTTED’ main street in crime-ridden city, where almost all shops have closed

The snap, taken in the heart of the city’s famed shopping district , shows a group of tourists wandering down a gutted Powell St – a way once bustling with businesses. However, instead of being graced with an array of shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants, the party is seen encountering countless shuttered storefronts. More shots from independent commentator Erica Sandberg show more of the same, and how the thoroughfare that runs adjacent to the city’s Downtown , all the way from Market to Fisherman’s Wharf, has become a shell of its former self. The sights, while startling, should come as no great surprise to anyone keeping up with the now-years-long saga of the crime-ridden, homeless-overrun city , which recently had two nets installed on both sides of its seminal bridge to stop suicides.

It was warned that its lenders could potentially seek to foreclose on the property if an agreement is not reached. ‘All threats and shaming attempts are futile. We will share what is happening to our fellow human beings on the streets. We will identify those responsible. Truth to power.’

In November, the city took drastic measures to clean up their streets as world leaders came into town for the APEC summit. But as soon as they left, the homeless population returned to the streets.

Protective steel fences were erected around the Moscone Center in the SoMa District, where the event was held. Police were also out in force, roads closed, and traffic detoured.

But after the conference wrapped up Thursday, November 17, so did the special attention paid to SoMA and the bordering Tenderloin District, where the worst of the city’s homelessness is concentrated.

DailyMail.com photos show the homeless filling the streets in the Tenderloin District where vagrants regularly relieve themselves on the sidewalk just weeks later.

‘As you walk around here, it’s kind of like you have to do a Poopie Dance, always avoiding stepping in s**t,’ Rick Garcia, an architect, told DailyMail.com.

During a debate on Fox News with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis openly mocked the reality by displaying a map delineating feces purportedly found on the city streets.

DeSantis said, ‘Human feces is now a fact of life, except when a communist dictator comes to town.’

Howard Ul, 60, manager of the Golden State Donut Shop in the city’s Tenderloin District, told DailyMail.com: ‘Every corner here around here now is like garbage. They’re all back.’

‘Everyone came for APEC, and overnight this area was cleaned up,’ he said. ‘They did an awesome job. My question is – why don’t they come to clean anymore? What are they doing to keep it up and help people who can’t seem to make choices for themselves?’

Crime and filth in the Golden Gate City has forced business and citizens to flee causing a ‘doom loop’ – referring to a city’s decline when tax incomes fall as residents and businesses leave, causing revenues to decline in a downward spiral.

Jeremy Bernier, a software engineer visiting the city shared a video on social media of a group he claimed to be drug addicts gathered outside his Airbnb.

Bernier described the city as the ‘most depressing place I’ve ever seen’ and went on to ask ‘wtf is this and who the hell is in charge of this city?’

‘So many drugged out people standing up while fully bent over with their head to the ground, taking what appears to be fentanyl,’ he added.

‘Tents everywhere, people passed out on sidewalks. This is worse than 3rd world countries. Such an embarrassment.’

Data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner showed that San Francisco has entered its deadliest year on record for drug overdoses with 752 accidental overdose deaths as of December 6.

It tops the highest year on record – 2020 – when 726 people died.

The rise in drug deaths goes hand in hand with a crime wave which has forced businesses to shut down and emptied the city center.

Is this the most dangerous square mile in America? Crime hotspot in Oakland where gas stations and In-N-Out are hit by brazen car thieves dozens of times EVERY DAY – but cops say they are powerless to stop it

‘We are f***ed,’ an exasperated police officer candidly declares as he patrols a Chevron gas station in Oakland, California, during the Friday morning rush. The spot is one of three gas stations that surround Oakland Airport and which have become notorious for vehicle thefts. Within a single square mile, cops claim criminals strike a dozen times or more per day, every day, mainly targeting victims who are headed to and from the airport. But the officer, who’s picked up an overtime shift to keep watch and act as a deterrent, wasn’t just referring to the theft epidemic when he made the strikingly blunt assessment.
